Super Nintendo Recreated In FPGA Clone Console

SNES-FPGA-Clone-ConsoleIf you’re anything like us you’ll no doubt be amazed by the many different retro gaming projects that surface on a daily basis. From reimaginings of old favourites to custom built cartridges containing fan translations, our favourite hobby holds plenty of excitement for those involved. One of the more recent surprises though is the SNES FPGA, a clone of Nintendo’s 16-bit console all crammed into a single board.

All this jargon though is something we’ll need to get our heads around. A FPGA (also known as a field-programmable gate array) is a programmable integrated circuit which provides a platform for enthusiasts to create their own hardware. A great example of an FPGA being used in the retro gaming world (which is also on topic) sits within the sd2snes flash cartridge. Instead of having countless different chips on the flash cartridge’s main board, (for example, the DSP-1 and SA-1 chips which are needed to play the likes of Super Mario Kart and Kirby’s Dream Land 3), the sd2snes’s on-board FPGA mimics the programming behind these custom chips to successfully boot the games into memory.

While the original hardware may be perfectly fine as it is, we’ll never ignore any attempts to recreate classic consoles on new hardware - as you’d expect, there’s a wide range of these projects going on, some of which have been made into purchasable setups such as the Minimig. The in development SNES FPGA is exactly as it sounds, a custom built clone capable of playing Super Nintendo games.

While the compatibility may not quite be there just yet, the clone’s developer has successfully had the likes of Chrono Trigger, Mega Man X, Super Mario World, and many other favourites working on his homemade effort.

Needless to say, the future is here…our entire childhood condensed into such a small space.

They haven't released anything but videos so it could all be hot air.

I do hope it is not and they do release something.
