The Super FX chip hidden away in the likes of Super Nintendo games Star Fox and Stunt Race FX was an incredible leap forward, yet was rather limited at the same time. Being fed up of the sluggish framerate, one enthusiast has taken it upon himself to overclock the original Star Fox to make it run at a more impressive speed.
To get round this hardware limitation with Star Fox, RetroCollect user Drakon has replaced the original Super FX chip inside the cartridge with the much more powerful Super FX 2 chip (more commonly seen in Doom, Winter Gold and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island).
With the added strength inside the Star Fox cartridge, the results are more than visible once displayed side by side with the original. Running at an incredibly smooth framerate and slightly faster than the original, you'll never be able to play Star Fox in the same light again.
Although the Nintendo 3DS remake of Star Fox 64 (Star Fox 64 3D) is coming out this Friday, were more than tempted to hold back our funds and take Drakon up on his offer of building one of these overclocked cartridges instead.
