Super Mario Sunshine Unofficially Ported To Nintendo DS In Super Mario 64 DS ROM Hack

Super-Mario-Sunshine-64-DS-ROM-HackSuper Mario Sunshine might not be every retro gamer's favourite outing of the famous plumber, but its quirky mechanics sure do attract a loyal fan-base. Without the water-propelled action and cleaning mechanics though, how would the Gamecube hit's levels fare when thrown into a more traditional 3D platformer? Well, you're about to find out with a hack of Super Mario Bros 64 DS known as Super Mario Sunshine 64 DS.

Over on the Kuribo64 forums, Fiachra has spent the last few years slowly sculpting a brand new experience on the Nintendo DS using the various landscapes from Super Mario Sunshine - including the likes of Bianco Hills, Pianta Village, and Gelato Beach. As many of these environments previously relied on Gamecube specific functionality and gameplay, new challenges and stars have been implemented to better suit the action in Super Mario 64 DS.

In Fiachra's most recent update though, it would appear a portable Super Mario Sunshine is quickly becoming more of a reality. Having further sussed out the inner workings of the DS remake of the Nintendo 64 title, additional code and programming has been added to create a fantastic replica of Mario's water-powered F.L.U.D.D. backpack. As you'd expect, this means the hovering, turbo nozzles and rocket powers are actually useable in this snazzy ROM hack.

Needless to say this fan-made creation is anything but complete, however, the curious amongst us will be pleased to know that a ROM hack patch of the current progress is available to download.
