Super Mario Bros. Movie Alumni Actor Bob Hoskins Passes Away

mariomarioluigimarioBob Hoskins, the man who played Mario in the Super Mario Brothers Movie in the early 1990s passes away at the age of 71 due to complications of pnemonia.

In the past few years, we've lost many actors who've contributed to the Mario Bros. image in the pre-Charles Martinet age. Both actors from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show live action/cartoon mishmash (Captain Lou Albano who played Mario and Danny Wells who played Luigi) passed away in the past few years, with Wells expiring ironically at the end of Nintendo's self proclaimed Year of Luigi. Dennis Hopper, who played King Koopa in the Super Mario Brothers Movie also passed away. But in an age where the character of Mario didn't really have a voice of his own, Bob Hoskins did a tremendous job bringing the Italian, New York born and bred plumber to the mainstream.

For this, we here at RetroCollect bow our heads for a moment of silence in Hoskins honor.

Hoskins contributed plenty in the movie world. Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Hook (both of which also had video games) were less important to us as gamers. Hoskins had answered questions in the past about his experience with the Super Mario Brothers Movie and he'd often quote it as his least favorite role. His co-star, John Leguizamo (who played Luigi) has been a bit more kind to the role and even put out a video for a 20th anniversary screening of the film, talking about his experience with working on the movie and the now late Bob Hoskins. Check out the clip below as it offers some candid recalls of the movie.

So again, while Mr. Hoskins may have loathed his role in it, we thank him for delivering us one of the brightest spots in an otherwise lackluster motion picture. What are your thoughts on the movie? Did Hoskins do well as Mario? Feel free to comment below.
