Strider Reboot Announced For Current & Next Gen Consoles

San Diego Comic-Con is always chock-full of announcements that get everyone's nostalgic juices flowing, and this year was no exception.  Capcom were present and correct - and brought with them the surprise announcement of a Strider reboot.

In case you've been stuck under a rock for the past twenty-four years - Strider was a 1989 arcade platformer that had you hang-gliding, somersaulting and shredding giant robot gorillas to pieces with your sword. It was insane (the good kind), and was quickly ported to all manner of platforms shortly after its release.

So it was great news to hear that Double Helix (the studio behind BattleShip, Silent Hill Homecoming and the slightly more promising Killer Instinct reboot) have been beavering away on a reboot of the beloved franchise.

The new title tasks our titular hero with freeing the city of Kazakh from the oppressive grasp of its ruler, Grand Master Meio. The developers have opted to keep the traditional Russian-style architecture, however the levels will be less linear, and exploration is to be encouraged. Players will also be able to cause chaos with a slew of new moves and weaponry, and i would imagine there'll be a gorilla or three in there at some point.

Strider Announcement Trailer

No release date as of yet, but we know the title will be distributed digitally to the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC platforms sometime in early 2014.

Are you as excited as us?  Or will one more HD announcement make you sick?  Let us know!

I know, right? Looks like they've nailed the acrobatic style of the original.

Well, I'm buying it! I have to admit I think the post-Strider 1 visuals have alienated some and I thought Strider 2 was too graphically busy (and "scarfy"). But for $15 or less it's irresistable.
