While we previously assumed that Capcom was not celebrating Mega Man's 25th birthday, it would appear they're actually combining it with the anniversary of Street Fighter. The Japanese developer has just announced Street Fighter X Mega Man, a crossover Nintendo NES themed game which will soon be released for a free download.
Given that the 2D beat-em-up series also made its debut in 1987 with the less memorable and soon forgotten Street Fighter, it makes perfect sense to combine the two series for a joint birthday party. Street Fighter is no stranger to the Mega Man series, given that Mega Man X featured a hidden Hadouken move in one of its levels.
Mega Man has also seen himself line up in 2D beat-em-up themed releases with the likes of Mega Man: The Power Battle, an arcade title which puts the blue bomber's fists to use against the various Dr Wily creations over the years. While it wasn't quite up to Street FIghter II standards, it was an enjoyable release nevertheless.
This time round though, it is the cast of Street Fighter that are the making the transition over to Mega Man's world. Street Fighter X Mega Man is an all new 8-bit Mega Man title which puts the blue bomber up against the likes of Ryu, Blanka, Chun-Li and Dhalsim in Street Fighter themed levels. Each of the Street Fighters will hold their own new and unique weapon which Mega Man can then wield once victorious, including Chun-Li's lightning kicks.
