Sonic Xtreme Sega Saturn Prototype up for grabs on eBay

Sonic-Xtreme-PrototypeOh my, what do we have here?! One of the holy grails of collecting, a prototype/beta of the cancelled Sonic The Hedgehog game for the Sega Saturn known as Sonic Xtreme. One the prototype and Sonic collectors don't want to miss.

Having started out as a Sega Megadrive game, then being moved to the Sega Megadrive 32X and eventually brought over to the Saturn, the game hit various issues throughout the process before eventually being cancelled in 1997.

The project was run by three different teams over the time it was in development, with each team producing a different version. one of which can be seen in a gameplay video below:

For years, the Sonic Xtreme prototype remained a mystery. Although working copies had been confirmed as existing, the game was locked up tight either in a personal collection of an ex Sega developer. In 2005, his surviving Beta copy of the game was put up for auction and sold for the tidy sum of $2,500.

Following a lot of controversy, the game was eventually released to the public in 2007 with a downloadable ISO that could be played on modified Sega Saturns or via emulators. But to keep the legitamacy of the original prototype, the owner watermarked the ISO to prevent fake copies being sold on eBay and messageboards.

The current auction on eBay is the original disc in which the watermarked ISO was created from. Coming from the personal collection of the man behind GameSniped, an avid prototype collector, we can put our faith in this auction being the real deal. Collectors, ready your wallets!
