As far as fan games go, very few offer an experience similar to their inspiration. Sonic fan games/hacks however are another matter. With an incredibly strong community behind them, it's no surprise that their latest offering Sonic the Hedgehog Classic is quite something.
There are very few games that can rival the development time of Duke Nukem Forever, yet Sonic the Hedgehog Classic is one of them. Having been in development for such a long time, Sonic Retro member Hez was proud to finally release his work earlier this week.
Coming as a standalone fan game for Windows, it can be downloaded for free from his release thread over at Sonic Retro. Sonic the Hedgehog Classic features levels more in keeping with the design style of Knuckles Chaotix, while maintaining the familiar gameplay from the main run of Sonic games. With 8 zones on offer for Sonic, Tails and Knuckles to explore, this is yet another download to add to the queue in preparation for the weekend.
