Sonic The Hedgehog ‘Boom’ ROM Hack Brings Awful Voice Acting To The Sega Mega Drive

Sonic-Boom-Mega-Drive-ROM-HackOur much loved blue hedgehog has always had an attitude, but his transition into the 3D world equipped him with a vocal arrogance. Whether or not you enjoyed Sonic’s outings on the Dreamcast and beyond, it’s safe to say that his dated lines had even the biggest fans cringing. In an attempt to prove to Sega how silent Sonic should be, one ROM hacker has brought all of his catchphrases from Sonic Boom into the 16-bit world.

Various Sonic ROM hacking forums across the internet were recently graced by the well known modder VAdaPEGA, who dropped his latest efforts upon retro gamers just hours after April Fools Day had passed. Taking the original Sonic The Hedgehog title for the Sega Megadrive, the Portuguese hacker has resculpted the 1991 classic in the most bizarre way imaginable.

Starting out with the iconic chant over the Sega logo being overwritten by an edgy spoken sentence from Sonic Boom, you’re instantly reminded how great the speechless years of the 16-bit era really were. The game then presents a rather depressing title screen featuring a dull looking Sonic, which is soon accompanied by countless other catchphrases you’d wish you never heard once the game starts. After a handful of rings are collected, Sonic blabbers on about his love for the golden tokens - only he never seems to stop. This voice over keeps throwing out more and more emotionally draining sayings, all whilst our love for the original game is tested .

Needless to say this ROM hack is a piece of art in the most sinister way imaginable. If anything this unofficial Mega Drive take on Sonic Boom is concrete proof as to why the blue hedgehog has failed in later years. At the same time it’s also quite possibly the most hilarious retro gaming release we’ve seen in years - and one you can ‘enjoy’ now via emulation or on the original hardware using an Everdrive.
