With the upcoming re-release of (arguably) the best Sonic game of all time on a range of devices, Sega of America has posted video footage of Kazuyuki Hoshino, Sonic CD's art director, showing off unreleased art.
Sega has recently released an onslaught of critically positive Sonic the Hedgehog content, including Sonic Colors, Generations, and now a re-release of Sonic CD. Hoshino-san's art showcases prototype logos for the game, as well as other art used for Amy and Metal Sonic. Why Sega decided to hold out on this content previously is anyone's guess, but better late than never.
Sonic CD Developer Diary with Kazuyuki Hoshino
The upcoming re-release of the game features a fan-created engine by an independent developer nicknamed Taxman, though his full name is Christian Whitehead. Sega approved his port after he released proof of it's existence running on an iPhone way back in 2009. The physics engine will be ripped partially from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Mega-Drive/Genesis. The port even features Tails as an unlockable character.
While owners of Android-operated tablets purchased from American chain Gamestop have had access to the game for a while now(November 2011 and onward,) Windows Mobile, iOS, PC, PS3 and 360 owners will all get a taste later this week as the game is set to be released with a full list of achievements/trophies, along with the soundtrack from both the Japanese and American release. The game has currently not been announced for the Nintendo Wii or Wiiware download so big N fans will have to check out the "Blue Blur" on another system for the time being.
