Sonic 3 Complete: The Definitive Way To Play Sega’s 16-bit Masterpiece

Sonic-3-Complete-ROM-HackBelieve it or not but Sega’s final output on their 1994 release Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is a slightly jumbled up mess. The whole process of splitting the game up into two halves with Sonic & Knuckles left some of the flagship stages in the incorrect order, missing visuals, and various other oddities. Knowing this, ROM hackers have sculpted together a more complete and definitive way to enjoy the game in Sonic 3 Complete.

Combining the entirety of both games into a single ROM, Sonic 3 Complete allows you to play through all the game’s stages without a Sonic & Knuckles cartridge in sight. What’s most notable about this that Flying Battery Zone’s location in the game has been moved to what is believed to be the correct location - something that was changed late on in the game’s development by Sega. This instead has you arriving at Flying Battery Zone after you’ve beaten Carnival Night Zone, leaving the original cutscene at the end of Mushroom Hill Zone to lead you into Sandopolis.

While this may only be a slight change for the Sonic die-hards, the rest of the ROM hack has plenty on offer for fans of the series. For example, when beating Launch Base Zone when connected to Sonic & Knuckles, the game is rather abrupt in transporting you to the next area. Sonic 3 Complete, however, introduces a rather snazzy cut-scene between the two, connecting the two storylines together for a more integrated experience.

Elsewhere in this ROM hack you’ll be able to once again fight Launch Base Zone’s Big Arm that’s removed when connected to Sonic & Knuckles, see various upgrades to playing as Tails, several musical changes to the soundtrack, and also various other tweaks to make the game more complete.

So should you fancy once again tackling what could be described as the last decent Sonic game ever released, do it in style with Sonic 3 Complete - a ROM hack which works on the original hardware on flash cartridges. Full instructions and how to get going on this ROM hack can be found at the project’s release page below.

That is pretty sweet. I doubt we'll get much closer to how the game was meant to be than this hack.

It's a great shame that the game was broken in two in the first place.

This hack on my PSP is my preferred way of playing Sonic 3. It's just a wonderful piece of work.

Too bad you're only now reporting about it, when it's been out for over a year.
