Are you watching, Sega? The Unofficial Sonic 2 HD Project has released a newer build of their retro remake further pushing the boundaries of where these classic game revivals can be taken. With jaw dropping visuals and crystal clear audio, this is one remake project you don't want to be missing.
We previously looked at the Sonic 2 HD project in January 2011, and without a doubt the team behind the game are standing by Sega's old slogan- To be this good takes AGES. This lengthy wait, however, is more than worth it to see the 1992 classic in all its glory. We'd be surprised if anyone familiar with the original game doesn't smile once jumping into the action.
This alpha release comes with the pre-emptive note that there may be a few glitches and bugs around. For now, only the first few zones are playable, ending the demo after you defeat the first whimsical vehicle Dr Robotnik drives onto Emerald Hill Zone. That said there is more than enough reason to be enjoying this short sample, which the gameplay video below will no doubt ensure.

As we await further progress on this project and a hint of the Chemical Plant Zone being immortalised in HD, head on over to the official (or should we say unofficial) Sonic 2 HD Remake page and get ready to download the demo.
Update: Since release there have been several reports of a questionable key logging method used within the game, one which happens to be alarming many anti-virus applications. Whilst there is no official word as to what this code is doing in game, we must insist that those wanting to enjoy this game must do so at their own discretion.

Looks and sounds good though. Sonic never feels right though if I'm not playing it on a console, more so not a Mega Drive. Maybe I shouldn't be so pedantic in such matters
Sega needs to employee these people and get them doing Sonic games!
As we said in the 90's Gnarly!
I honestly cant wait to see the finished game, the likes of Chemical Plant, Casino Night and Metropolis would look stunning in these visuals.
Cracking stuff

Key-logging software. In a freeware remake of Sonic 2. The mind boggles.
