Shenmue Undub Project Brings Original Japanese Dialogue Back To The Dreamcast Classic

Shenmue-Un-Dub-Project-ReleasedNobody can argue against the fact that Shenmue is a gaming masterpiece, but are English speaking gamers really enjoying the Sega Dreamcast classic as Yu Suzuki intended? To remedy this curiosity, a team of game hackers have undubbed the 2000 release by reintroducing the Japanese dialogue with added subtitles.

This labour of love between several individuals has turned the incredibly detailed and accurate representation of the Japanese culture into something even more lifelike than ever before. With English spoken lines such as 'do you know where sailors hang out' replaced with the Japanese equivalent, Ryo's character amongst the countless NPCs become much more respectable and interesting - presumably how Suzuki intended his creation to be absorbed.

To further entice you in to adventuring through the streets of Yokosuka once more, the team behind this un-dub project have also ensured that their work is fully compatible with the game's sequel, allowing to use your save game in Shenmue II too.

As a Dreamcast owner, I always wanted for the other way round - to have the PAL release of SHENMUE 2 with the English dubbing from the original! It's always annoyed me about the xbox version - but not as much as having an unfinished trilogy for over a decade. Take the hint Sega.

Personally, and this goes for when I watch anime as well, I don't like having to read all the dialog. The problem is if you are reading you aren't watching. Sure the original voice acting might sound better to most of us but I can't read and watch the action at the same time. I much prefer being able to relax and hear the story.
