Release Date Confirmed For ‘Shaq Fu : A Legend Reborn’

Shaq-Fu-A-Legend-RebornBig Deez Productions had a dream; take a game often called “the worst video game of all time” and remake it for modern consoles. With a team made up of people who had worked on ‘Halo’, ‘Street Fighter’, ‘Final Fantasy’ and the full backing of professional basketball player Shaquille O'Neal they took to Indiegogo.

People scoffed On March 6, 2014, when they asked for $450,000 to remake ‘Shaq Fu’ and with good reason. According to Next Generation magazine, the original Mega Drive and SNES game “‘includes everything a good fighting game needs, with the exception of good fighting." Big Deez promised that for this sequel gameplay would heavily differ from its predecessor, closer to a modern day ‘Streets of Rage’ with ‘Street Fighter IV’ mechanics, rather than a bizarre one on one fighter.

Despite initial mockery, 1339 backers saw the potential and The campaign ended on May 5, 2014, with $473,884 pledged. The game creators at Big Deez Productions promised that the game would be released for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Now nearly four years later the dream is being realised, partially.

While ‘Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn’ will no longer be released for last generation machines (with a Switch version replacing the promised WiiU port) it will slam dunk onto PC, PS4, and Xbox One this spring in digital and retail format.

Now Developed by Saber Interactive , the sequel to the “so bad it might actually be good after all” cult-favourite once again puts players in the gigantic shoes of Shaquille O’Neal as he fights his way through the hordes of “hell and Hollywood.”

Apparently he will be able to pull off various combos, battle celebrity bosses and use various weapons such as katanas, shuriken and baseball bats. So far there has ironically been no mention of the basketball projectile weapon seen in the first game though.

Saber will share further details regarding timing and delivery of rewards for the game’s Indiegogo backers directly via the game’s Indiegogo page. But even if you didn’t back the game all those years ago, it’s worth having a watch of the original video; Mainly because it featured Shaq have a fight with a drinking straw. Hopefully he will be a bit more capable in digital form.
