Sega's Racing Classic Daytona USA coming to XBLA/PSN

Listen carefully, and you might just hear Sega fans across the world singing 'ROLLING START!'. That's because Daytona USA, one of Sega's most successful and beloved racing games, is returning to Xbox Live Arcade and the Playstation Network very soon.

Often cited as one of the highest-grossing arcade games of all time, anyone who's ever stepped into an arcade has probably played or at least seen Daytona USA- whether it's the single-player, two-player, four-player or monster-size eight-player set-up the game simply refuses to die. Even today, finding a Daytona USA cabinet is pretty easy (although finding one that isn't busted to hell is a different matter). AM2's classic racer offered three stages- including the famous oval Three-Seven Speedway track- and among other things, had some very impressive force-feedback on the steering wheel (you really have to turn that thing!) and stayed at a silky-smooth 60 frames per second throughout. It also had an instantly recognisable soundtrack, with such deep, soulful lyrics as 'Do-do-doo-do-do-doo-dooo, DayyTOOONAAAA!' and, of course, the little Game Over song. Despite its immense popularity, the license for the Daytona USA name, which belongs to the International Speedway Corporation, has prevented any recent ports (aside from the strange arcade-only Sega Racing Classic re-release) until now.

Original Arcade Game Footage:

The upcoming XBLA and PSN versions will include all the content of the original arcade game, as well as online multiplayer for up to eight players, and a bonus Karaoke Mode that will let you sing along to the music (although that implies that there are people out there who don't already sing along to Daytona USA's music). The XBLA version comes out on the 26th of October, with the PSN version scheduled for 'late 2011'.

Wait, what do I put in this box again? Oh, it's about me. I like playing weird and unusual games- the sort you're likely to forget about- and I hope you like reading about them because they're what I write about. And game trivia too. Please look forward to it!
