Sega's Castle of Illusion Remake Relisted on Digital Marketplaces

Back in September last year, Sega Studios Australia's 2013 remake of the classic Mega Drive platformer Castle of Illusion, was delisted from Steam, Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network with very little notice beyond a price drop. Just as silently, the game's now snuck back onto these services, a rare digital relisting.

A peril of digital downloads, especially for games based on other properties that didn't get physical releases like Castle of Illusion, is that as soon as the license expires, that game can disappear for good. There's a huge list of examples of this, ranging from XBLA and PSN ports like those of Konami's licensed brawlers The Simpsons and X-Men and Sega's own After Burner Climax, or even contemporary licensed titles like Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3.

This, however, is a rare case where the game came back- the game is now available to purchase again from Steam, PSN and XBLA The game itself is definitely worth looking into- a very charming 2.5D remake of the Disney-themed platformer, complete with original voice-over work and a soundtrack by Grant Kirkhope of Banjo-Kazooie theme. It was also the final game of Sega Studios Australia, formerly a part of Creative Assembly, before closing up in 2013.

The one element of the game missing despite this comeback is, sadly, the one probably of most interest to retro players- the Playstation 3 version had a pre-order bonus in the form of an emulated verison of the original Mega Drive game. Of particular note here is that this port was actually handled by emulation magicians M2, most recently announced aas the team behind the upcoming Seiken Densetsu port for the Nintendo Switch. There's no way to get this now, but if you haven't played it before, this remake is definitely worth a look now it's got a second chance.

Wait, what do I put in this box again? Oh, it's about me. I like playing weird and unusual games- the sort you're likely to forget about- and I hope you like reading about them because they're what I write about. And game trivia too. Please look forward to it!
