Sega Saturn ISO Loading Flash Cartridge 'Sarooo' In Development

Sarooo-Sega-Saturn-HDLoader-In-DevelopmentWith the arrival of the GD-Emu for Dreamcast and the in-development PS-IO for PlayStation, retro gamers are finally casting aside their game discs in favour of SD Cards and ISO loading hardware. But where does this leave the Sega Saturn? By the looks of it a new device to boot Saturn games from memory cards in the works, one known as the Sarooo.

Over the last decade we've seen a plethora of new hardware for our classic consoles, many of which providing a more reliable alternative to enjoying our favourite titles. For example, flash cartridges have provided the likes of the Sega Mega Drive, Super Nintendo and Game Boy with more convenient methods of booting up the classics. Optical media based consoles, however, are much more complex undertakings, as It's only as of recent that the technology required to mimic a Compact Disc drive has become affordable and readily available.

The Sarooo is the latest of these optical drive alternatives hailing from China, one set to give the Sega Saturn a new lease of life. As of speaking there is incredibly little to go on officially, other than a newly launched website (in Chinese) and a short video showing the device in action. Within the footage released by the developers, the Japanese RPG Langrisser 3 can be seen booting up on the Saturn, after being chosen from a built-in menu system.

While the video may leave you with a lot of questions, other snippets of information about this device have been popping up elsewhere. Going by some photographs of a prototype unit left on a Chinese image sharing site, the Saroo appears to be closer to that of a flash cartridge by utilising the cartridge slot on the system instead. What makes this more peculiar though is that these images seem to suggest that the Sarooo also goes by the name 'Saturn Master'.

Needless to say we're both a little confused and rather excited. No release date is set as of yet, nor has any price been suggested. Stay tuned as we attempt to bring you further updates on this fantastic development and what could soon be the definitive way to play the likes of Sonic R, Shining Force 3 and Panzer Dragoon Saga.

A cartridge sounds fantastic. But don't many Saturn games use Redbook audio?
