Sega Returns To Unfinished Business With 'Sonic Lost World'

Sega-Returns-To-Unfinished-Business-With-Sonic-Lost-WorldsEarlier today Sega released a trailer for their latest title in the Sonic The Hedgehog series, Sonic Lost World. While most mainstream gaming sites out there are suggesting this enticing trailer is a homage to Super Mario Galaxy, we instead believe Sega have headed back to the nineties - to finally finish the Saturn's unreleased title Sonic X-treme.

We can't deny that there is a strong link to Super Mario Galaxy, especially given that both Sega and Nintendo are collaborating on this title, however, a lot of the action featured within this trailer features action reminiscent, albeit improved, of the fabled Sega Saturn title. Something we very much suggest you make your own mind up on...

Nostalgic links and opinions aside, it would appear that Sega have once again provided something that looks rather well suited to the retro gaming masses. With a prominent Green Hill Zone appearance, prevalent 2D gameplay and those much loved blue skies, is it too early to get excited about this new release?

Looks awesome, and I can certainly see the similarities with Xtreme. Such a shame this is going to be a WiiU exclusive.

Apologies to 3D Sonic fans: I wish they'd just give up on Sonic in 3D. I'm sure someone will figure out how to do it but Sega's had enough chances. Even their Temple Run clone is poorly made.

Have you played Generations? Or even Sonic Unleashed or Sonic Colours. Sega HAVE figured out how to do quality 3D Sonic games, and those are perfect examples.

Generations is utterly fantastic. You really should give it a shot, especially if you enjoyed the 16bit games :-)

@SonGoku @JoeMD I admit I only played a few levels of Generations on Steam (with a less than optimal PC). The visuals were often astounding but whenever the 3D parts went "off the rails," control became an issue for me. I enjoyed the Sonic 4s a lot more. I've felt for a while that Sega must not playtest their games long enough to smooth out their issues, getting the broad strokes right but ignoring the details. The 3D ends up being either non-interactive or a bear to control. I also despise Sonic's friends.

However, even haters don't gotta hate: based on your recommendations , I've gone ahead and ordered a PS3 copy of Generations from Amazon and I'll give it another chance :)

I think the problem was it took too long for them to find the perfect quality for 3D Sonic games. Until Sonic Colours (maybe even Uleashed), we had to put up with Shadow wielding a gun, that TERRIBLE Sonic 06 game, Sonic Riders, Sonic holding a sword, Sonic in a fairy-tale story and the werehog. Those were less than admirable styles of gameplay. It put a massive drain on some people's patience.

You're right. Sonic Generations, Unleashed and COlours are prime examples of a great 3D SOnic game, but Lost World is going to be changing that for a new game. That's kind of a risky road to take. Let's hope it pays off.

This game looks very good. :-)

I specifically love the cartoony style. Some may argue it looks too cartoony, but I think it fits the Sonic series very well. I think where Sonic tried to be too realistic in the past didn't work very well.

The gameplay is very new, but it looks great. A combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Sonic Xtreme. This game may be the deciding factor whether I get a Wii U or not.
