Sega Game Gear Titles Coming To The 3DS’s eShop This Thursday

Sega-Game-Gear-Titles-Coming-To-The-3DS-eShop-This-ThursdayJust after the Nintendo 3DS has turned a year old, Sega have announced that the first three Game Gear ports to arrive on the Virtual Console will be released onto the system this Thursday.

Sega first announced that they’d be bringing Game Gear titles to the 3DS Virtual Console way back on the 2nd of March 2011 though, so has the wait been worth it? The answer is…maybe. Although Sonic The Hedgehog: Triple Trouble is an undeniably solid portable entry in the spiny mammal’s history, the price point of £4.50/€5 may (rightly) put many people off.

Shinobi – developed for the Game Gear from the ground up – is a slightly more reasonable prospect at £3.60/€4 though, and is arguably superior to the retail Shinobi title released in November last year. Hopefully its superior sequel – The Silent Fury - will arrive on the service soon as well.

To complete the trio comes Dragon Crystal, a dated roguelike that was released on both the Game Gear and Master System. Its £2.70/€3 price tag suggests Sega knew it was the worst of the bunch – and its not wrong.

The prices are perhaps a little high to make the games impulse purchases, but 1UP’s Jeremy Parish did claim the emulation work for these Game Gear titles was impressive earlier this month when he went hands on with them – and was far better than Nintendo’s efforts with its Gameboy titles.

It is also worth noting that Sega did state Columns and Sonic Drift 2 would be bought to the eShop when speaking about the three titles above last year too  – so we can probably expect these two to come to the service sooner rather than later.

Gotta love the Sunset Park Zone Train level in Triple Trouble, worth the purchase alone :)
