Sega Dreamcast's 'Toy Racer' Goes Back Online With Unofficial Servers

Toy-Racer-Goes-Back-OnlineAlthough the Dreamcast is known for having a strong library of classics you can dip into today, one aspect of Sega's swan song we can never revisit is the Dreamarena and its accompanying online gaming service. With the servers all but long gone, many elements which made the Dreamcast what it is are now defunct - or are they? Now joining the ever active Phantasy Star Online private servers is a dedicated multiplayer hub for No Cliché's Toy Racer.

Originally released back in 2000, Toy Racer was a spin-off from the prior release Toy Commander, one which immortalised the racing sections of the earlier title in a stand-alone package. While not the greatest Dreamcast game around, the frantic RC car racing on offer was more enjoyable with the more players connected. Where Toy Racer excelled in this area was through its online functionality, allowing gamers to battle it out all around the world.

With the official servers for Toy Racer and the rest of the Dreamcast library shut down back in 2003, many of these titles have remained offline ever since. Phantasy Star Online, however, has been somewhat lucky with various private servers surfacing since, all of which allowing you to still connect to other players through Sega's 128-bit console. Planet Ring has also been part of an online revival, with last year seeing unofficial servers surfacing to keep the game online. Toy Racer is now the next title to join the bunch.

Having recently been in contact with the game's original producers, one dedicated Sega gamer has obtained the missing code and knowledge needed to revive Toy Racer's servers unofficially. Speaking on the newly launched dcserv.org website, Petterk has released software that allows anyone in possession of a Broadband Adapter and Toy Racer to run their own game server.

Although it's anything but easy to run, expect this new arrival and revived connectivity to pave way for many more Dreamcast titles being reconnected in the near future. In the meantime, you may want to consider tracking down a Broadband Adapter for the Sega Dreamcast.
