Sega Dreamcast SD Card ISO Loader GDEmu Gets Menu Driven Interface

GDEmu-GDMenu-FrontendThe days of discs are long gone. The Sega Dreamcast has been leading the way in this retro-revolution with an after-market solution to loading games on the original hardware using SD cards. While the initial release of the GDEmu may have done the job just fine, it left a few things to be desired - the biggest of which has just been addressed.

If you’re just tuning in to what could at first seem like rather confusing news, here’s a quick reap. A talented developer/manufacturer devoted to the Sega Dreamcast has created a new add-on for the console which replaces the in-built GDROM drive. Once installed, this new board can load Dreamcast games into memory and trick the console into thinking its reading a disc.

As it stands though, the GDEmu uses a rather unusual method of booting games into memory compared to traditional flash cartridges. Upon powering on the system, you need to push a button on the hardware to cycle between the various games stored on the SD card. Needless to say, the more games on your GDEmu, the harder it is to quickly jump into your favourites given there is no visual indication as to what game is up next.

With this in mind another Dreamcast devotee has managed to create a piece of software to address this issue. The newly released GDMenu is a front-end loader for the GDEmu which displays a on-screen menu listing all of your installed games. By simply navigating this list and selecting your choice, games can now be run from the GDEmu without the need of its clunky hardware keys.

Those of you who happen to have a GDEmu to hand or are considering making the purchase can find out more below. Be warned though, the video tutorial below seems to be presented by a rather unexpected character.
