Sega Dreamcast's 'Planet Ring' Servers Brought Back Online

Sega-Dreamcast-Planet-Ring-Servers-Brought-Back-OnlineBack in 2000, Sega released one of their few titles which made use of the console's online functionality - Planet Ring. Despite the fact that Sega have since closed down the Dreamcast's servers, this short lived multiplayer game featuring four minigames with up to 32 players has been brought back online through homebrew efforts.

As of speaking there is now a new project on Google Code featuring all the software you need to run you own Planet Ring server known as earthcall. Unfortunately though, this isn't for the faint hearted as it requires quite a lot of work to get running - never mind the rather pricey Dreamcast Broadband adapter too.

Nevertheless this homebrew effort is a real pleasure to see, especially since Planet Ring has effectively been offline for a decade. Those not feeling too technical, however, will surely have their patience rewarded as Planet Ring servers will no doubt start popping up around the globe.

Its great how gamers are keeping this stuff going. Theres clearly fans out there still, so sad that one day the servers will shut down for ps3 and xbox 360, lets just hope dedicated fans like here will keep private servers alive
