Sega Dreamcast Emulation Arrives On The Raspberry Pi 2

Sega-Dreamcast-on-Raspberry-Pi-2With the recent release of the enhanced Raspberry Pi, it was only a matter of time before gamers pushed the pocket-sized computer to its limits. Taking the source code from the popular emulator Reicast, talented developers have managed to get Sega Dreamcast classics up and running on the Raspberry Pi 2.

While there’s still plenty of work to be done on this new development, this early proof of concept has shown that even with just 1GB RAM and a 900 MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7, the likes of Soul Calibur can be run on a small budget. Although the emulator stutters slightly when the game kicks into action, developers have stated that this current build of Reicast for the Raspberry Pi needs optimising and will eventually bring more stability to play.

Needless to say were rather impressed that a £32 system can showcase some of Sega’s greatest works, and potentially - following continued developments - provide a suitable alternative to unpacking those discs and control pads. Until more progress is made, be sure to see how Soul Calibur handles on the miniature computer.
