SD Card Loading 'UK1541' Adapter Announced For Commodore 64

UK1541-Commodore-64-Disk-Drive-Flash-CardOver the last few years we've seen the arrival of countless flash cartridges for classic consoles, many of which allowing gamers to boot up their many favourites on the original hardware using just SD cards. Similar solutions have also been available for the likes of the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 too, however, the later of these is about to get an incredible boost in terms of functionality. Projekt64 have just announced the UK1541 - a SD card enabled device that not only simulates a fully working disk drive, but also comes with its own LCD screen and remote control.

Although yet to be released, the hardware within the UK1541 is finished and awaiting some final tweaks to its on-board software. Promising to be a real time drive emulator with cycle-exact 6502 instructions, the UK1541 comes equipped with ;4KB RAM, allows up to 8gb of storage space through SD cards, and can boot just about any D64 disk image into memory. Due to be priced around the 55-65 Euro mark, the UK1541 is promising quite a lot for very little.

Unlike other similar solutions, the UK1541 doesn't use a menu driven interface on the Commodore 64 to select games, instead the entire operation and choosing of which games to boot into memory is done on the adapter's built in screen. Although limited in resolution at 320x240, the device's LCD screen is capable of showing full directory structures and the contents of your SD card, along with the details inside each of the D64 images. Using the bundled remote control you'll be able to cycle through the file manager, choose a game or application, and then load it as if a disk drive was actually attached to the system.

While we await the all important release date, be sure to check out the UK1541 running scene demos below:
