Satoru Iwata Immortalised As Playable Character In Nintendo NES 'Balloon Fight' ROM Hack

Satoru-Iwata-Balloon-Fight-ROM-HackOne of the earliest games the late Satoru Iwata worked on was the Nintendo NES classic float-em-up Balloon Fight. The 1985 release went on to inspire gameplay elements within the likes of Super Mario Bros through its advanced programming methods, and as they say the rest is history. In act of remembrance, one mourning fan of Iwata has modified Balloon Fight to feature Nintendo’s CEO as the main protagonist.

Although simplistic in its offering, this hacked version of Balloon Fight is the perfect send off to the Japanese programmer and business man. Using visuals from one of his previous works - Earthbound - the game’s main character closely resembles that of Iwata, with Kirby shaped balloons to keep afloat his legacy at HAL Laboratory.

Those interested in having a go at this memorial ROM hack will be able to apply a downloadable patch to a legally obtained Nintendo NES ROM of Balloon Fight - one which can be applied using LunarIPS. And don't be surprised if you start seeing fan-made cartridges of this title too, as a label has already been designed sporting Iwata's cheerful face in flight.

This is awesome. I can't think of a better tribute than for the designer to be in the game he was involved in. :)

Personally i find this kinda creepy. Iwata wasn't one to enjoy this kind of adulation - he could easily have made people aware of his illness and garnered this sort of compassionate attention whilst still alive but chose not to make a spectacle or a martyr of himself.
