R.I.P. Psygnosis - Sony Closes Their Liverpool Based Studio

RIP-Psygnosis-Sony-Closes-Their-Liverpool-Based-StudioToday marked a very sad day in the games industry as we all had to wave goodbye to British gaming veterans Psygnosis. Founded in 1984, the company which was then bought out by Sony in 1993 brought us countless timeless classics, all of which have influenced both our gaming lives and the very games we play today.

Psygnosis, or SCE Studio Liverpool as we reluctanly know them today, was closed earlier today following Sony deciding to focus their efforts on their other studios around Europe. A grave loss given that without this very company we'd be living in a world missing dthe likes of Lemmings, Worms, Alundra, Shadow of the Beast, Benefactor, Destruction Derby, Wipeout... we could go on.

Sony released this statement this morning regarding the closure:

It has been decided that Liverpool Studio should be closed. Liverpool Studio has been an important part of SCE Worldwide Studios since the outset of PlayStation, and have contributed greatly to PlayStation over the years. Everyone connected with Liverpool Studio, past and present, can be very proud of their achievements.

However, it was felt that by focusing our investment plans on other studios that are currently working on exciting new projects, we would be in a stronger position to offer the best possible content for our consumers.

This bank holiday weekend we'll be devoting our gaming time to our beloved Psygnosis classics, whilst admiring the various artworks of Roger Dean - which withouta doubt helped sell countless copies of these games. Be sure to join us and let us know which titles helped shape your retro gaming world.
