The newest animated Disney film, Wreck-It Ralph, is proving to not only be an entertaining film but also homage to the retro characters – particularly the villains, we all know and love. When it hits cinemas this November the film will be showcasing everyone from Dr. Eggman to the Pac-Man Ghosts.
The premise of the film is an interesting one. The hero (anti-hero?) of the film is the villainous Ralph from the (fictional) 8-bit arcade game Fix-It Felix (which itself seems to be inspired by the original Donkey Kong). After years of being the bad guy and doing the same thing over and over Ralph decides it’s time for a change in lifestyle and leaves his 8-bit world to find the greener grass on the other side of the pixelated fence. During the trailer (which you can see below) we can see Ralph explore all kinds of video-game genres to find his new home. Most amusing for readers of RetroCollect though will be the group meeting between Ralf and several other notable video game villains such as Zangife from Street Fighter, the aforementioned Ghosts from Pac-Man and Dr. Eggman/ Robotnik from Sonic as well as Mario’s Bowser and many other familiar faces.
The fact that a Disney movie is featuring so many classic video game characters only goes to show just how influential the industry is as well as how much our hobby has hit the mainstream. Opening on November 2nd, here’s hoping the film will lead to more retro-game focused films appearing in the future.
