Retro Inspired Indie Hit ‘Gunman Clive’ Released For Game Boy

Gunman-Clive-Ported-To-Nintendo-Game-BoyWhether it’s down to the pixelated art style or retro themed gameplay, the indie gaming scene today is very much inspired by the classics we know and love. One of the more recent titles to hit a wide range of modern platforms known as Gunman Clive has just been taken back to its roots. A Nintendo Game Boy version of the game has just been released for free by the original developer.

If you’re yet to check out the Gunman Clive games, you’re tasked with the role of a lone gunslinger out to save the mayor's daughter from a group of well-armed wild west bandits. The game itself features action similar to that of Gunstar Heroes and Contra, offering a fantastic blend of run and gun action.

After releasing the Gunman Clive HD Collection for Wii U, Bertil Hörberg of Hörberg Productions decided to take a break from another big project and head back to where he believes the game’s roots are. After working out the ins and outs of Game Boy development, Hörberg has managed to recreate the game’s entire first level for Nintendo’s handheld as a playable demo.

While Hörberg has stated that it is unlikely any more work will be done on this port, it’s fantastic seeing a mainstream release working flawlessly on classic hardware. Those interested in checking the Game Boy ROM of Gunman Clive out will be pleased to know it’s available as a free download. This will either work in a Game Boy emulator, or on the original hardware using a flash cartridge.
