Retro Inspired Indie Hit ‘Cave Story’ Port In Development For Sega Mega Drive With Playable Demo

Cave-Story-Mega-Drive-Port-In-DevelopmentIf you haven’t already experienced the masterpiece that is Cave Story, you really owe it to yourself to. Also known as D?kutsu Monogatari, this 2004 indie release for Windows based PCs is a critically acclaimed hit which pulls in everything that made the likes of Castlevania, Metroid and Mega Man great. While it is already available on a wide range of platforms, one retro developer has taken it upon himself to port the game to the Sega Mega Drive.

In what could be considered a demake, this 16-bit port of the retro-themed game doesn’t appear to discard anything from the original game. The iconic soundtrack remains intact although pumped through the Yamaha YM2612, whilst the game’s visuals currently look as crisp as they did upon release over a decade ago.

As of speaking the Mega Drive port of Cave Story is limited to the first few areas of the game, however, nevertheless it’s an incredible feat seeing Studio Pixel’s creation on classic hardware. Whether or not this port sees completion is something we’ll have to keep an eye on. In the meantime those interested in sampling this new offering will be pleased to know that a playable demo is available - with any updates made being added to the downloadable releases.
