Retro Gaming News Round-Up (20/06/14): Barbie Corvette Consoles & Duke Nukem Demakes

Retro-News-Round-Up-20-06-14From modified Barbie Corvette Consoles to retro demakes of first person shooters, it’s time to catch up on all the retro gaming news from earlier this week - that didn’t make the frontpage. With plenty of homebrew releases to also keep an eye on and a Game of Thrones introduction using Zelda sprites, it’s time for the Retro Gaming New Round-Up!

Introducing the Retro Gaming News Round-Up

When the RetroCollect team aren’t busy away glued to their video game consoles, we’re all working behind the scenes to ensure that the greatest and best retro gaming site around is also the most relevant. Part of this task often includes scouring the web for the latest news regarding everything to do with our favourite hobby, all with the aim of providing the most upto date classic gaming news source.

The only downside to this is that we occasionally have to prioritise some stories over others due our userbase’s demands. That said, we’re always striving to provide content for every single type of retro gamer - so this all new series of articles is here to showcase all of the stories we discovered recently, but didn’t chance to write up.

So get ready for a selection of snippets and snags we’ve pulled together, all of which will keep you up to date with what’s going on in the wonderful world of retro gaming.

Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past meets Game of Thrones

One of the greatest aspects of retro gaming is how closed ingrained it is with everything around us. With countless pop-culture references to our gaming past in the media today, it’s refreshing to see the tables turned with old games being used to remake something modern. This is exactly what you’re about to see here too, a reimagining of the Game of Thrones introduction using graphical assets from the 16-bit classic, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Duke Nukem 3D steps back a dimension in a 2.5D Remake

Duke-Nukem-25D-Demake

While many will argue that this indie development isn’t truly 2.5D, it’s an amusing sight to see one of the most timeless first person shooters turned into a pixel paradise. Available to download as a free three level demo, any fans of the series should check out this parody of 3D Realms’ shooter.

RetroN 5 European Release Date Set For September

After a rocky few months and plenty of pre-order frustration, a release date for the European RetroN 5 has been set. FunStock, one of the UK retailers of the system recently announced that the consoles will be arriving on our shores sometime in September this year.

Demo Released for Super Nintendo port of Rick Dangerous

Not too long ago we reported that a French developer was working hard behind the scenes to port the home computer frustrate-em-up, Rick Dangerous, to the Super Nintendo. Having made some good progress, SNES developer Alekmaul recently took the time to speak with Allgamers about his efforts and share some footage of the title.

And if that wasn’t enough to get you ready to go adventuring, a downloadable ROM containing a demo of the first level was also released. Be sure to download it and drop it on your Super Everdrive or SD2SNES.
