Replace Your Commodore Amiga Disk Drive with a USB Floppy Disk Emulator

Gotek-Floppy-Disk-Emaultor-in-Commodore-AmigaLet's face it. Loading games up from both cassette tapes and floppy disks is a tiresome ordeal by today's gaming standards. Luckily enough there are plenty of alternatives on offer for a wide selection of classic home computers, and the Commodore Amiga just got another - a snazzy USB ready floppy disk emulator.

This all new device will have you boxing away your games in no time as you'll finally be able to boot up just about every game and scene demo from a single USB stick. Taking the readily available Gotek 3.5" Floppy Disk Drive to USB emulator, one Commodore enthusiast has re-written the device's firmware to be compatible with the Amiga - and then created a custom piece of software which allows you to choose your desired disk (from the attached USB stick) to be emulated.

As the Amiga sees no difference between a traditional floppy disk drive and this modern alternative, games and software will load up exactly as they would do if on physical media, even with the iconic load times we're all used to. That said, this new alternative isn't the easiest to set up. On the newly opened blog detailing the entire procedure of doing away with the dated floppy disk drive, you'll be tasked with flashing new firmware to this device along with getting it inside your Commodore Amiga.

While it might not be for the faint-hearted, at just $30.99 the thought of having just about every Commodore Amiga classic at the ready without a disk in sight will no doubt be tempting the more electronically advanced users amongst us.
