Rayman Creator Michel Ancel Backs Rayman Legends Wii U Original Release Date.

raymananselThis is Michel Ancel, creator of Rayman. By the looks of it, he seems to be backing a fan-fronted movement to get the now-pushed back release of Rayman Legends on the Wii U back up to February.

You may or may not have been following this story so here's a brief review. Rayman Legends was originally being developed as a Nintendo Wii U exclusive that was pushed back to a late February release. Though recently, Ubisoft announced that the game is going multiplatform for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. The release for all three systems has been pushed back to September. An alleged and anonymous developer/programmer of Rayman Legends shared frustration with Ubisoft's decision, claiming that the game has currently gone gold (i.e. It's ready to be shipped to stores,) and that the finished product was completed and ready to go. The source also stated that they were upset at Ubisoft's decision due to all the overtime and hard work they put in just to make the deadline.

Here's where things get interesting. The version for the Wii U is not getting any improvements, according to the source. There's no exclusive features being added, nor are the versions going to be any different other than console-specific features (i.e. The Nintendo WiI U's screen in the controller, etc.) The game is also not being adjusted in any way. Development has ceased for the title on the Wii U. Currently there is a drought in games for the Wii U, and if the game launches in September, gamers are concerned that Ubisoft will blame their lack of interest on the game itself, or the developers, not that bigger titles such as Grand Theft Auto V and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD are coming out around that same time.

Sadly, Rayman's previous adventure suffered a similar fate. The game launched multi-platform at a time when bigger releases such as Arkham City and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword were being released. The game quickly dropped in price. History appears to be repeating itself.

Rayman was created by Michel Ancel back in 1994 originally for the Super Nintendo, but development quickly moved to the Atari jaguar and later the Playstation. Filled with cartoon-like graphics, Rayman was a very colorful platformer that was an evolutionary step for mascot-themed platform games. Several sequels followed such as the mega-hit and frequently ported Rayman 2, as well as later the Raving Rabbids side-series. This is why this picture has created such a huge impact on fans. A creator is standing up to his publisher, something many would fear to do.

Now that you have the backstory, here's the reason why this picture means so much to so many people. Ubisoft tried to put a bandage on their giant PR head wound by announcing that Rayman and Wii U fans will have a shot at downloading a second exclusive demo for the game. However, many gamers are taking to grassroots campaigns to show Ubisoft how they feel.

First, gamers began to post in the Ubisoft downloadable forum on the Wii U their distaste for Ubisoft's decision. Right when you turn on your Wii U, tons of drawings of an upset Rayman or protests about the lack of the game shipping are showing up. Nintendo doesn't even have to make a statement on how they feel, as fans are doing it for them. This is also a huge loss for Nintendo since they had practically no titles launching this month, a great time for Ubisoft's Rayman Legends to swoop in and grab more purchases from starving Wii U owners. Sadly, this is not how Ubisoft is seeing things.

It is currently unclear if the other people in the picture are co-workers or fans, but Ancel (left) was kind enough to show his distaste for the decision as well. Currently, there is a petition on Change.org with over 9,000 signatures pleading to Ubisoft to release the game on the 26th of this month (The original planned date.) Though gamer's cries may go unanswered, they are definitely helping the publicity of the game. Check out the petition in the link below. As always, tell us what you think about this! Should Ubisoft just release the game for Wii U owners first knowing that it's ready now, or should they launch the title with the other system versions in September?
