Rare Reveal Unseen Footage Of Cancelled SNES & Nintendo 64 RPG ‘Project Dream’ aka (Banjo Kazooie)

Rare-Reveal-Project-Dream-GameplayLast month the team at Rare were kind enough to dig into their archives to showcase some previously unseen footage of their long lost Twelve Tales Conker 64. Following on with their promotion of the Rare Replay compilation for Xbox One, the British born developers have finally uncovered an even deeper secret - with the first known footage of their cancelled adventure Project Dream surfacing online.

Project Dream was a swashbuckling quest due to be released on the Super Nintendo. Utilising the visual style of pre-rendered 3D visuals as seen in Donkey Kong Country, Rare were hoping to create the most detailed role-playing game to ever hit a home console. As development continued and time moved on, the project was then moved on to the more powerful Nintendo 64. Although Rare had spent several years working on Project Dream, the pirate themed adventure starting Edison soon found itself cancelled in favour of something else.

Having sneaked a preview of the then upcoming Super Mario 64, Rare decided to move their efforts with Project Dream to something they felt more comfortable with. The in-progress game’s environment was then adapted to suit a more cutesy platformer, and the pirate protagonist Edison was soon replaced by a certain bear. Banjo Kazooie was born, and the rest is history.

Similar to Rare’s recent reveal of Twelve Tales Conker 64, the footage shown of the early versions of Banjo Kazooie and Project Dream (on both the Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64) are in fantastic quality. Again it’s safe to assume that this gameplay footage has been taken directly from an emulator recording, which again leaves us knowing that playable versions of these games are out there somewhere. Whether or not we’ll ever get to experience them ourselves is up to Rare, but until then be sure to take a look at Banjo Kazooie’s beginnings in Project Dream.

That was a great vid. Fantastic to finally see footage of Dream (and some early Banjo gameplay) after all these years.
