Ralph Baer 'The Father of Video Games' Passes Away At 92

Ralph-Baer-Passes-Away-at-92As the games we know and love grow with age, sadly those behind our favourite creations do too. After 92 long years, the inventor often referred to as the Father of Video Games for his early work creating the Magnavox Odyssey, Ralph Baer has passed away.

As early as 1966, Baer began experimenting with television sets and how he could turn these entertainment boxes into interactive gaming rigs. In 1968, the first prototype of the ;Magnavox Odyssey arrived (dubbed the Brown Box) which allowed simplistic games such as Tennis to be enjoyed at home on any TV upon release in 1972 - a whole three years before Atari's home-console Pong arrived.

Many of these titles were brought to life with overlays (similar to that of the Vectrex), injecting colour into these previously black-and-white offerings. This early technology was then further expanded upon with the world's very first gaming peripheral, the light-gun.

Later in life, Baer would also go on to create other significant gaming items of decades gone by such as the handheld phenomenon, Simon.

According to Wired's contributing editor, Chris Kohler, a close source of Baer confirmed that the 92 year old passed away last night. While details are yet to emerge regarding Baer's passing, we as retro gamers need to salute the inventor's contributions decades ago which have, if anything, made all our gaming lives what they are today.
