Nintendo's Pokemon Red Enhanced In To A Game Boy Color ROM

Pokemon-Red-Game-Boy-Color-Version-ROMUpon the arrival of Pokemon Gold and Silver, the original titles in the series which started it all were beginning to look a little dated. Being aware of this and wanting to do Pokemon's origins justice, one ROM hacker has colourised the entire Pokemon Red Nintendo Game Boy ROM and introduced more detailed sprites from later games.

This impressive feat is the creation of the talented ASM programmer Drenn. Having found an older hack of Pokemon Red which added a splash of colour to the world of Kanto, Drenn decided to push further forward and add additional colour and detail to the once lacklustre in-battle Pokemon sprites.

To gamers who grew up with the monster collecting RPG series, the outcome of Drenn's work is nothing short of jaw-dropping. The once black and white fields and halls of Pokemon Red we've grown accustomed to have been rejuvenated, as have its now more detailed inhabitants.

Further adding to its greatness, this ROM hack has been carefully prepared in the sense that it is not just one for emulators. Anyone who happens to own a Game Boy Color flashcard (such as the GB USB Smart Card) will be able to play this colourised classic on the original hardware.

This colour patch for Pokemon Red can now be downloaded. Like other ROM hacks, to enjoy this fan-made patch you will need to have an original Pokemon Red ROM file to which you can apply this patch to. Full instructions on how to patch this ROM can be found within the download, or you can refer to this handy ROM patching guide on YouTube.
