PlayStation 1 SD Card ISO Loading Disc Drive Alternative 'PSIO' Nears Release

PSIO-V2-PreviewAfter almost a year of development behind the scenes, the PSIO team have returned to showcase their PlayStation 1 SD Card ISO loading device in action. With plenty of progress to show, it would appear the device capable of loading games into memory from removable media is nearing release.

Since we first looked at the PSIO back in 2012, both the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast have since joined the party with their very own disc drive replacement enhancements - one of which can now be purchased and installed. These aftermarket solutions allow you to completely cast away your game discs and boot game images from SD Cards, similar to flash cartridges found on the older consoles.

The PSIO, whilst removing the need for game discs, still works alongside the original CD drive instead of being a direct replacement. Similar to the early cheat cartridges found on the system, the PSIO plugs straight into the parallel port on the reverse of the console, doing all its calculations from there.

The latest update from the PSIO team showcases version 2.1 of the device in action, flawlessly loading The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Parappa the Rappa and No One Can Stop Mr. Domino into memory. The more interesting aspect to this video, however, is the menu from which these games are booted from. With what appears to be an easy to use menu and storage space capable of holding a small library, this is one device you don't want to miss out on.

While no release date has been confirmed for the PSIO as of yet, one of the developers has stated that they're hoping to make the accessory available before the end of the year.

Wow. This could be amazing at the right price. I this article it say no mod will be needed to the ps1 but in the faq on the Web site it says it will need a mod. Can we clear this up? Is the faq out of date or are we wrong here?

My bad! It seems things have changed slightly since I last wrote about this. I'll have to look into what this 'special modchip' is.
