PlayStation 1 & 2 Backwards Compatibility Heading To PS4

PlayStation-4-Getting-PS1-and-PS2-Backwards-CompatibilityOver the years Sony have been rather good to retro gamers by providing a good selection of classics on their digital download services, along with both their PlayStation 2 and 3 consoles being backwards compatible upon launch. Rumour has it now that the PlayStation 4 is also heading this way with both PS1 and PS2 compatibility.

According to Eurogamer, both PlayStation 1 and 2 titles are due to recieve the emulation treatment on Sony's latest console, although with the added possibility of HD visual enhancements. This will not be the first time Sony have opened their back catalogue to gamers, as many fans will note that the PlayStation Network has had titles such as Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII on offer.

The report recently published on Eurogamer also goes on to state that the developers behind the scenes have been working hard to ensure that these old titles doesn't suffer from blurry upscaling. If anything the end product should be similar to Sega's recent Dreamcast collection on the Xbox 360, something the PlayStation's early library truly deserves.

Some people may argue, but I think Sony shot themselves in the foot by not making all PS3 consoles PS2 compatible. I like to put the discs in. I think Sony are maybe clutching at straws, but it is a step in the right direction.

Excellent news I hope this support will be for Discs and not just for Digital downloads, like most of us here I still have my ps1 and ps2 discs and It's nice to get to use them. The only thing that could make this any better is PS3 support although I'm sure that would be far more complicated. Still if it did support ps3 as well it would be a great selling point for the console. I'm still not buying next gen for a long while yet but this definitely makes me sway towards the ps4 despite being a long term Xbox 360 user.

Yeah, this article isn't really clear. Are they just adding PS1 & 2 titles to the Playstation store on PS4 (like there already is for the PS3) or are they making it compatible for the exisitng media? I am guessing it is just digital downloads.. One interesting thing though.. my mate bought COD: Ghosts for PS3 and then when he got his PS4 he bought the $15 upgrade to the PS4 version. He had to download the whole game on his PS4 from the PSNetwork, however it requires the PS3 media to run it on his PS4! Very strange... It kinda defeats the purpose of having to download the whole thing and also eludes to the fact that PS4's can read PS3 discs. Food for thought.

More than likely this will be all digital as I'm sure Sony realizes that not everyone these days has their PS1 and PS2 game discs handy. PS3 games are still all over the place. PS1/2 games are very retro. However, I would hope they support game discs as I myself am an avid collector / player. I think they should charge the people that don't own the game discs and the fans that do own the discs should be able to pop it in there, verify the game is legit and enjoy it. At least that's what I'd like to see happen.
