With just days to go until the UK heads out for a weekend full of retro gaming action, we felt it was about time to reveal more about the additional competitions and plans we have underway for Play Expo 2012's retro gaming section. Let’s just say that we have a lot in store for you RetroCollectees - pixels, polygons and prizes!
If you didn’t already read our first announcement regarding Play Expo, RetroCollect will be present at the event hosting a plethora of competitions. Amongst these are a timed stint on three Super Nintendo classics, a battle with Dr Robotnik’s genius, and a ten player manic blast ‘em up session on Bomberman.
This, however, was clearly not enough for you pixel hungry retro gamers. Luckily enough, the organisers of Play Expo got in touch a few weeks ago to ask if we were interested in hosting several more competitions. Needless to say we jumped on this fantastic opportunity and can now proudly announce the following competitions which will be taking place too under the RetroCollect banner.
4 Player Micro Machines 2 Turbo Tournament (32 Entries)
Remember those countless hours spent battling it out between your friends on the Sega Mega Drive version of Micro Machines 2? Well you’re going to have to call upon those bygone memories and hope that your skills can be dusted off in time for next weekend.
We’ll be putting you up against 32 other players in a series of knockout rounds on Codemasters’ timeless 16-bit racer. With four players attached using the all important controller ports on the J-Cart, all you have to do is stay ahead of the pack, secure those points, and advance into the semi finals.
Whether or not you have what it takes to get any further is up to you next weekend.
Nintendo 64 Goldeneye 007 Deathmatch (32 Entries)
Do the terms Facility and Power Weapons mean anything to you? Excited? Well, we expect to see you taking part in our action packed Goldeneye 007 deathmatch tournament on the Nintendo 64.
While we cannot deny that the Nintendo 64 FPS which almost defined the genre hasn’t aged too well, it still holds plenty of enjoyment for anyone rekindling it their multiplayer past. Just watch out for those sneaky players wielding the troublesome RC-P90.
You’ll be battling 32 other players in a series of knockout rounds on Rare’s iconic shooter. Whether you play it safe by hiding in the facility’s toilets or going in all guns blazing, be warned that Play Expo will no doubt be harbouring many seasoned shooters.
Sega Rally 2 Desert Time Trial
In 1998 Sega followed up their hugely popular arcade racer with an equally as impressive sequel - Sega Rally 2. Needless to say the arcades were flooded with driving enthusiasts attempts to perfect their times, at least until the title was brought to the Sega Dreamcast a year later.
RetroCollect’s very own Sega Rally enthusiast lostruin has stepped forward to host this time trial competition on the Desert track of the second game, presumably in the hope of finally finding a worthy opponent.
On the day simply take a seat in the car of your choice and race the fastest three laps of your life. Every second counts.
Pokemon Stadium Mini Game Challenge
Pokemon isn’t just about raising the ultimate team and tackling the Elite Four. Deep within the Nintendo 64’s Pokemon Stadium titles are mini game challenges worthy of breaking up even the strongest friendships - Something RetroCollect’s very own Katsu hopes to do with his menacing competition.
You’ll need to cast aside everything you know about Pokemon’s strengths and weaknesses as this entire tournament lies upon your natural ability to handle mini game tasks. Bashing the hearts out of your friends, stealing their points and ramming them out of the arena is recommended here, however, we won’t be held responsible for any black eyes!
So should you dare take part in this vicious tournament, we’ll be keeping our distance. Pokemon is serious business...
Soldier Blade Special Caravan Stage Hi-Score Tournament
If you’re a gamer of precise movements able to navigate countless projectiles while racking up an impressive score, we have the challenge for you. Taking the ultimate Shmup console, the PC Engine, you’ll be given the chance to destroy as much as you can in five minutes on Soldier Blade Special Caravan Stage.
This official, yet modified, version of Hudson Soft’s Soldier Blade is one specially created for competition play. The game throws you into a unique level designed for mass destruction, whilst also testing your scrolling shooter skills.
The longer you go unscathed, the more points are there for the taking. Good luck!
Warioware Inc Mega Party Games Time Attack Challenge
How quickly can you tackle the twenty different mini games that Wario has in store for you? RetroCollect’s devious mainvein has set this challenge in the hope of destroying your gaming confidence, whilst finding the fastest retro gaming fingers around.
As you work your way through and successfully complete each challenge presented to you, the speed will be increased - something which is both a blessing and a curse.
With records around the minute and a half mark, your senses and reactions will be your vital assets, as long as you can control them down to the finest movement.
Can you handle Wario's almighty mission in record time?
4 Player Power Stone 2 Battle Arena (32 Entries)
Last but not least our final challenge in store is one for the well travelled fighting game fans amongst us.
Using Capcom’s 2000 Sega Dreamcast brawler, Power Stone 2, you’ll need to grab just about anything you can get your hands on in the hopes of stealing those gems.
Should you be yet to experience the Power Stone series, imagine if Capcom took everything that was great about Street Fighter II, added a third dimension with a dashing of Super Smash Bros. That, fellow RetroCollectees, is what Power Stone is all about.
Battle your way into the semi finals and rightfully punch your way to the top. This is going to be one furious, albeit dirty, competition only the best will win.
Bonus Stage: Get yourself a Limited Edition RetroCollect T-Shirt
Competitions and battling aside, should you be at Play Expo during the weekend you’ll be able to show off your colours and wear something with great pride. This weekend marks the first chance retro gamers will finally be able to get their hands on a limited edition RetroCollect T-Shirt.
For the low cost of £8 each, you’ll be able to get either a Guys or Girls tee in sizes S, M, L or XL. Numbers, however, are extremely limited so don’t leave it till the last minute to secure yours.
£8 you say? Bargain! But should you be low on funds - be sure to win one of our competitions above as every winner will receive one of these epic garments.
Game on! Hopefully we will see you all sometime next weekend.
