PK MaternalBound Σ Patch Brings All The Censored Elements Back To Super Nintendo RPG 'Earthbound'

Maternalbound-Earthbound-ROM-HackEver since Earthbound arrived on the Nintendo Wii U Virtual Console, gamers worldwide have finally been able to sample the stunning Super Nintendo RPG at a reasonable price. Despite this though, the game they're enjoying features heavily censored content and adjustments to that of Shigesato Itoi's Japanese original. In an attempt to restore the removals, ROM hackers have released a patch which brings the North American release back to its roots.

If you're not aware of the many changes this game suffered from, you're in for an interesting read. With much more relaxed rules in Japan regarding copyright, the original release of Earthbound (known as Mother 2) featured use of the trademarked Red Cross, a pixel-perfect representation of the Blues Brothers, along with a location named after the Grateful Dead band - amongst many others. The PK MaternalBound Σ Patch Project is now available to download via the Starmen forums, and it brings back many of these censored elements.

While the game still remains to be one of the best role-playing-games of all time despite its censorship, it's great knowing we can finally experience the 1994 classic exactly as Shigesato Itoi intended. Those interested should head on over to the forums to get the full list of changes, along with instructions on how to enjoy this ROM hack patch.
