Philips Videopac Classic 'Munchkin' Ported To Atari 2600 Via Starpath SuperCharger

Munchkin-Ported-To-Atari-2600Heavily based on Namco's timeless Pac-Man, Munchkin was the Videopac's answer to the arcade classic - and inevitably one which landed Philips in lawsuit territory. Nevertheless this gobble-em-up clone has since become one of the most memorable titles on the Videopac, so much so it has now been unofficially ported to the Atari 2600.

The impressive arrival of Munchkin on the 2600 is a rather ironic turn of events, as if anything, the licensed version of Pac-Man for Atari's early console was absolutely atrocious. Instead of featuring near identical gameplay to that of the Videopac offering, Munchkin on the Atari 2600 seems to cast aside the single screen action in favour of scrolling mazes.

What makes this new homebrew release a notable ones is that it has been released exclusively for the Starpath Supercharger, an add-on which loaded games from audio cassettes through a headphone-jack enabled 2600 cartridge. Instead of arriving on a traditional cartridge, those who purchase the Atari 2600 version of Munchkin will receive an audio cassette containing the game. Those amongst us, which will no doubt be many of us, who don;t have a Supercharger to hand will be pleased to hear that a ROM file of the game is also available upon purchase.
