Perspective Correction Comes To Sony PlayStation Emulation Via PCSXR-PGXP

PCSXR-PGXP-Perspective-Corrected-PS1-EmulationIf you’ve ever felt that the way the PlayStation handled straight lines was a little off, you’re not alone. Sony’s 32-bit powerhouse dealt with its polygons in an imprecise way which often left various clipping issues and an unusual perspective from some camera angles. Through the magic of emulation though, this is all about to change.

A talented developer over at the NGEmu forums recently released his very own fork of the PCSXR PlayStation emulator known as PCSXR-PGXP. This slight variation on the existing emulator introduces an all new feature known as PGXP, an abbreviation for Parallel/Precision Geometry Xform Pipeline.

Without going too technical, the original hardware lacked the processing power to always display textures at the right angles. The most common sight from this less accurate rendering method was often seen in long straight road textures that joined up awkwardly on racing games. Through PGXP the PlayStation’s graphics are now carefully analysed to get the correct information about the polygons on screen, and then the textures are re-applied manually for the best fit. The end result is an incredible step forward in the emulation scene, but also one the purists will no doubt feel conflicted over.

PGXP is still very much in development and various bugs have been found in a variety of games, but in the meantime anyone interested can download this version of PCSXR to experience this upgrade.
