PaperDude VR - Atari's 1984 Arcade Classic Paperboy Recreated In 3D Using Oculus Rift, Kinect & A Fitness Bike

PaperDude-VRRe-enacting the antics of our favourite paper-delivering simulator in our local neighbourhood would no doubt land us in hot water. Thankfully our desires to take control of the wheel and launch papers up and down the street have been answered. Globacore have combined the futuristic virtual reality headset Oculus Rift with both Kinect and a KickR exercise bike to replicate the 1984 arcade classic in PaperDude VR.

Staying true to the source material, this creative project has developed a volumetric-pixel world in Unity, one very much like the original accompanied by colour changing mailboxes, smashable windows, various obstacles and more. Once strapped in with the Oculus Rift headset in place, the Kinect camera will read your paper throwing movements and the exercise bike below will determine your speed and direction based upon your body's movements.

Being able to look around Paperboy's world and having the ability to really throw those papers into the mailboxes (or wherever you please) must be an incredible feeling - almost as if you're inside a real arcade machine. The footage of the game shown in the promotional video is an early version missing many of the timeless obstacles, non-player characters, and of course, the end of level BMX track. These are due to arrive in later updates, but until then take a look at the project in action.
