Out Now: ‘Legends of Localization Book 1: Legend Of Zelda’ Details The English Localisation of Nintendo’s Classic RPG

Legends-of-Localization-Legend-of-Zelda-BookMany retro gamers will be able to confidently discuss the ins and outs of their favourite series and how they came around, but one topic which is often overlooked is the localisation process. Countless classics we know and love have been translated from their Japanese origin into something we can easily understand, but more often than not the experience we ended up with was somewhat different to what the rest of the world saw.

Take for example Super Mario Bros 2 on the Nintendo NES. This fantastic and quirky platformer was actually a completely different title outside of the Mario series known as Doki Doki Panic. Nintendo simply repurposed and adapted the game to feature the Mushroom Kingdom cast, and the Western world was none the wiser. Although a colourful example, there are so many stories along these lines and quite a few of them remain untold - something the website Legends of Localization has been addressing for several years.

Run by the creator of the critically acclaimed fan translation patch for Mother 3 on the Game Boy Advance, Clyde Mandelin has finally decided to create a book on his findings. Starting out with the Legend of Zelda, Legends of Localization has published a 208 page epic on the many differences, changes, and translation oddities that came with the 1986 adventure.

Priced up at $35 for the standard edition, Legends of Localization Book 1: Legend Of Zelda features some stunning visuals and tales worth unfolding, along with added extras such as collectable postcards. This is something not only video game historians and preservationists should pick up, but also anyone with a love for the Legend of Zelda.
