Online Multiplayer Hits The Mega Drive / Genesis Via Krikzz's Mega Everdrive Flash Cartridge

Online-Multiplayer-on-Mega-DriveOver the last few years Krikzz has single-handedly revolutionised the way we get our retro fix. With a large selection of flash cartridges for just about every system emerging from his development lab, there can't be that much left for the Ukrainian to create? Think again. Further proving his love for the Mega Drive, Krikzz has begun updating his advanced 16-bit flash cartridge to bring along online multiplayer to Sega's classic system.

While the Mega Drive is anything but a connected console, it has had a few run ins with the internet and similar offerings in the past with devices such as the Sega Channel and X-Band. As great as these may have been, Krikzz appears set to introduce a new alternative to the Mega Drive which will finally allow you to battle with your friends through a USB cable connected to an internet enabled device (such as a laptop).

In his latest demo, Krikzz showcases an altered version of Battle City (a popular Nintendo Famicom title which was unofficially ported to the Mega Drive) connecting to the internet and seeking out an opponent. Once connected, the game reverts back to the title screen and allows Krikzz to select two player mode as if another player was sat right next to him. This proof of concept seems rather solid though as the video goes on to show a lag free session of battling tanks for a good seven minutes before the Game Over screen arrives.

If you happen to have a Mega Everdrive to hand, you too can sample this online multiplayer demo. Krikzz has uploaded to Dropbox all the files you need and the all important instructions on how to connect up to another Mega Everdrive user.

And with this development in mind, don't be too surprised in the near future if Streets of Rage 2 and Sonic The Hedgehog 2 get the same functionality.

Kudos to Krikzz! I'm dying to lay my hands on Mega Everdrive, and kick some ass on the Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy hack... or that 8 player Bomberman demo, by Factor 5.
