Aside from the likes of Earthbound (Mother), there were very few light hearted RPG adventures released during the 8 and 16 bit eras which dared to be different. Falling into this niche, Nakayoshi To Issho was a Nintendo Famicom exclusive featuring a bizarre plot and battle system- a curiosity which ROM hackers have translated into English.
The unusual plot behind Nakayoshi To Issho sees the protagonist working for the Japanese publication Nakayoshi Magazine, exploring various worlds from the magazine's shoujo manga such as Sailor Moon. The RPG elements overall are very much simplified, removing experience points from the game placing the battle focus on a slot machine style system.
While this game was originally intended for a much younger audience based on its manga tie-ins and fairly easy gameplay, Nakayoshi To Issho is a refreshing step away from the standard RPG genre. A step which is somewhat needed when the grinding in Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest gets a becomes a little too much.
