Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata Passes Away At 55

satoru-iwata-banana-e1367043854644Japanese Gaming giant Nintendo issued a statement early this morning confirming the passing of CEO Satoru Iwata.  It's been well documented that Mr. Iwata had battled with ill health in recent years, even missing last year's E3 event.

Iwata started his Nintendo journey joining HAL Laboratory straight out of university in the early 80's, and became the company's coordinator of software production in 1983 - before becoming president a decade later.  He had a hand in most of the company's beloved series (Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing & Pokemon, to name a few), and in later years became a fan-favourite thanks to his antics during Nintendo Direct episodes.

He was appointed Ninrendo's fourth CEO in May 2002, and led the company through it's greatest years with the release of the Nintendo Wii - and it's not so great years with the Wii U.

We here at RetroCollect HQ were heartbroken at hearing this news, as i'm sure most of our readers will be also.

Thank you, Iwata.
