New 'Doom' Mod Adds Selfie Stick And Instagram Filters

Screenshot Doom 20150222 111612Doom is possibly the most modded and manipulated videogame in the history of the medium. In recent times we've had the Donkey Kong Country mod, various game-engine updates in the form of the amazing Brutal Doom and even seen a cash machine hacked to play host to a port of id Software's genre-defining shooter.

In this modern world of social media and photo-sharing though, it almost seems perfect that somebody thought that Doom Guy should get with the times and start sharing his exploits on Diemos and Phobos (and ultimately Hell itself) through his Instagram-enabled smartphone. And so, here we have the InstaDoom modification. Not only does this set of .wad files from Doomworld user Linguica allow gamers to alter the colour filter used in the game, it also - rather brilliantly - allows the use of a selfie stick.

This addition actually takes the place of the BFG 9000 in the weapons cache and in order to activate the selfie stick in the first stage as shown in the image above, you'll also need to enter the infamous 'all weapons' cheat; but this just goes to show the level of creativity and the flexibility of the Doom community and the engine respectively. You'll need the original version of the game for the files to run (I used GZDoom on an Apple Mac), but be warned - entering a room full of Cacodemons while trying to take the ultimate selfie will almost always end in death...that is, until somebody mods Doom Guy's camera flash to fire plasma rounds.
