MSXDev '13 Coding Competition Brings High Quality Selection Of New MSX Homebrew Classics

MSXDev-13-Homebrew-GamesThe MSXDev homebrew development competition is one of the most prolific annual coding sprees to take place in the retro gaming world. Each year countless fans of the MSX range of computers begin work on creating new titles for their beloved system. Needless to say, this year had produced some stunning results - many of which worthy of becoming retail releases.

Shouganai (MSX Homebrew)

The first of these impressive titles is the winning entry, Shouganai (しょうがない) by Paxanga Soft. This quirky release features a gameplay-mix of the arcade classic Qix and the mobile phone's fabled Snake. Tasking you with the challenge of stretching out to grab objects from an arena whilst enemies roam free isn't easy, but it sure is addictive.

Malaika (MSX Homebrew)

Next up is Malaika, the latest title to be released by Relevo Videogames. Clearly drawing inspiration from the likes of Bubble Bobble, Snow Bros and Parasol Stars, Malaika takes the tried and tested single-screen gameplay formula and gifts the MSX with a title to remember - only this time it isn't bubbles, snowballs or parasols, its bones!

SHMUP! (MSX Homebrew)

Arriving as the most aptly named video game release of all time, SHMUP! is exactly what it says it is - a vertical scrolling shooter. While this new release from Imanok doesn't exactly bring anything new to the table, it does, however, offer a great console equivalent to the much loved genre on the MSX range of computers.

Gommy Medieval Defender (MSX Homebrew)

And last but not least, we're focusing in on one of the most visually stunning entries to the MSXDev competition - Gommy Medieval Defender. This Game & Watch-esque knock-em-down will have you fighting down the oncoming hordes of monsters scaling your castle, whilst juggling which ones to tackle next.
