MP32C64 Add-On Brings MP3 Game Loading Functionality To The Commodore 64

MP32C64-Load-Games-On-Commodore-64-With-A-MP3-PlayerAsk any retro gamer what one of the most memorable gaming sounds they know is, chances are they'll mention the screeches and squeals of a tape-based computer loading. While few of us have expansive collections of cassette around to relive this memory today, there's a new alternative in town which replaces the tapes with MP3 players.

Simply put, any game's data stored on a cassette tape is nothing more than a standard audiotrack - one which makes no sense to anyone listening other than the computer itself. What makes this more fascinating though is that the countless ROMs floating around on the internet containing Commodore 64 tapes can infact be converted back into an audio format.

With this in mind, here's where the all new MP32C64 devices comes in. This overly cute miniature replica of the Datasette is nothing more than a device capable of taking an MP3 player's audio back into the system. By using this method, gamers can build up a library of Commodore 64 games in MP3 format and play them back into the system without a tape in sight.

While there is already other ways of doing this available such as the Android app tapDancer (which also requires a MP3 to Tape Adapter), nothing quite beats having an additional add-on to a classic computer. The MP32C64 is compatible with any audio device, including CD players and mobile phones.

MP32C64 units are currently being sold by the creator of the hardware on eBay for 39 EUR each.

This kind of gadgets are cool. I purchased this another one on ebay too. It's similar and works great!

Cool but seems very expensive for what it is (just a connector and two wires).

It will probably allow accelerated tape loading using OTLA to compress and speed up MP3's so loading takes seconds instead of minutes.
