'Mother: 25th Anniversary Edition' ROM Hack Revives The Nintendo Famicom Adventure

Mother-25th-Anniversary-Edition-ROM-HackBelieve it or not but the cult classic series Mother first started life on the Nintendo Famicom 25 years ago. As highly regarded as it (and the sequel) is, the gameplay from 1989 is beginning to show its age along with the various issues gamers find returning to vintage JRPGs today. In an attempt to celebrate the game’s significant anniversary, a team of enthusiasts have spruced up the game’s visuals and approach in an attempt to streamline it for new and old players.

While the game is anything but broken nor in need of fixing, this new ROM hack dubbed the Mother: 25th Anniversary Edition is merely just a refinement of a timeless title. From revised world maps to slightly edited tile-sets to make the game’s locations more memorable, this updated version of the game draws a lot of inspiration from the more popular sequel Earthbound, bringing all the greats of the 16-bit title over. This update also spruces up the many in-game characters and enemies, giving them a more authentic look to the original clay models that were designed during development.

Various other tweaks to the difficulty have also been made, but the most impressive of all is that Tomato’s official translation for the Game Boy Advance compilation Mother 1 + 2 has been used to update the game’s dialogue.

Needless to say, there has never been a better time for those wanting to get into the series to make a start.

Mother: 25th Anniversary Edition (Famicom Hack) Gameplay

As usual, to enjoy this ROM hack you will need to have a legally obtained original Earthbound Zero Prototype ROM to which you can apply this patch to. Full instructions on how to patch this ROM can be found within the project's thread, or you can refer to this handy ROM patching guide on YouTube.
